Dean Burnett: Saying publicly that Robin Williams’s suicide was a ‘selfish’ act is ignorant and potentially harmful
From my facebook:
This is important. As somebody who lost a father to suicide I have researched and tried to understand the subject for years of my life. By now, I might even be an expert. Regardless of whether or not you are a fan of Robin Williams, it is important to understand depression and suicide. If you’re bitter toward celebrities for getting attention when they die, I don’t agree with you but I understand your thought process. If you’re bitter about people killing themselves and think it’s selfish…you are misinformed and you’re perpetuating a belief system that can only hurt others. The quickest way to lose my respect is to keep spouting this ideal like you’re some kind of savior who will shame people out of depression and suicide (as if). This essay breaks down why suicide isn’t selfish and why we need to be patient with those who are depressed, we need to keep an eye on them, and we need to (eternally) offer them our empathy. Suicide is not rational. It is a blind, hungry beast with no want of discrimination. And we can only help stop it if we understand it. Ignorance has never saved a life. May Robin Williams family and friends mourn properly, and may we help our sisters and brothers who are still with us out of the darkness.
